"Musicianship Through Mariachi: Introducing Latin-American Music in Theory Curriculum"
Garrett Thompson, Baylor University

This proposal addresses the need for broader representation of diverse musical traditions in music theory education, specifically focusing on Latin American music and the Mariachi ensemble. As scholars and educators strive to diversify pedagogy, there is a significant gap in the incorporation of Latin American genres within music theory curricula, despite the growing Hispanic/Latinx population in regions like Texas. This project proposes a model for integrating Mariachi repertoire into music theory instruction, using the Comparative Musics Model (CMM) to explore both theoretical concepts and cultural contexts. Through modular lesson plans, students will engage with topics such as tonic-dominant phrase models, harmonic analysis, and metric modulation, while gaining a deeper understanding of Mariachi's historical roots and contemporary relevance. These lessons aim to foster cultural awareness and avoid superficial engagement with the music, offering a comprehensive approach to Latin American musical traditions that can be adapted for various world music genres.
