"The Metric Fakeout in Underground Hip-Hop"
Brian Sanders, University of North Texas

Hip-hop artists such as J-Dilla, Madlib, and MF Doom experimented with Justin London's metric fakeout that became a crucial underground hip-hop aesthetic. This technique has not been discussed in previous scholarship. My presentation analyzes metric-fakeouts in six underground hip-hop songs by J-Dilla, Madlib, MF Doom, and Kendrick Lamar. My method will be a grading scale based on Medina-Gray's "smoothness" which will reveal the diversity of the underground metric fakeout. My presentation will show that the metric fakeout is a diverse technique that signifies the underground aesthetic of not following mainstream norms as a result of production experimentation.
