The film Halloween (2018) is a part of a thirteen-movie-franchise and is a direct sequel of the original Halloween film that premiered in 1978. The sequel has a slightly different plot but follows the same characters 40 years after the original, and both movies were scored by John Carpenter. This research combines narrative methodologies with music analysis to discover techniques Carpenter used that evoke meaning and development over time. We conducted this research by analyzing four tracks from the original score and their counterparts in the sequel. After analyzing each track, we found differences in the melody, harmony, rhythm/meter, instrumentation, and other sound parameters enhanced by sound effects and production. By isolating these parameters, we were able to identify timbral and thematic transformations between the original and sequel films to see how John Carpenter's compositional voice changed between 1978 and 2018.
