Dear Colleague:
It is my pleasure, in conjunction with the University of North Texas College of Music Theory/Musicology division, to invite you to the twenty-first annual meeting of the Texas Society for Music Theory, to be held in Denton on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6. It should be an interesting and stimulating program highlighted against the opening of the University's Lucille "Lupe" Murchison Performing Arts Center.
Our keynote speaker this year will be David Epstein, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Epstein is recently retired as Professor of Music and conductor of the MIT Symphony Orchestra. He is well known for his books Beyond Orpheus, and more recently, Shaping Time: Music, the Brain, and Performance. Professor Epstein will be addressing issues of time in music as related to analysis, cognition, and performance. Also featured on this year's program is a Saturday panel discussion entitled, "Pre-College Music Theory: Hopes, Realities, and Possibilities."
A TSMT luncheon will be held on Friday at the University of North Texas Club at College Inn, the University's acclaimed student restaurant. College Inn is a short walk from the College of Music building. The menu theme will be Italian cuisine, with an option to order a vegetarian or Teriyaki chicken entre. The cost of the luncheon is $6.00 (a gratuity will be appreciated at the time of the luncheon). If you wish to attend, please include this amount in your remittance, along with your registration slip. To participate in the luncheon, registration slips must be received by March 1, 1999.
Location: The meeting will be held in the facilities
of the University of North Texas College of Music.
For the Friday session, we will be meeting in the
College of Music building located on Avenue C (see
map, below). On Saturday, we will meet in the
newly opened Murchison Performing Arts Center
located on Avenue E.
Travel: The University of North Texas is located in Denton, Texas. From DFW Airport, take the North Airport exit and take Texas Highway 121 to Interstate 35E. From Dallas Love field, take Mockingbird lane to I-35E. Take I-35E north to Denton. Denton can be reached by ground transportation primarily via U.S. I-35 or Texas Highway 380.
Parking: Parking is available in two locations on campus. A parking garage is located on Welch street, east of the University Union building. Rates for the parking garage are $1.15 per hour or $6.00 per day. Free visitor parking is available in the Fouts field parking lot on Avenue E. A shuttle bus is available to locations close to the College of Music building, however, this parking lot is only a 2-3 block walk to the Music Building (but uphill). For the Friday session, some may find the parking garage more convenient (for special accommodations, please see the UNT Service Officer at the information booth located in the Fouts Field parking lot). For the Saturday session, the Fouts field parking will be immediately adjacent to the Performing Arts Center. Note: for those of you familiar with Denton and UNT, Avenue C is now closed to through traffic adjacent to Campus between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The most convenient access to the UNT Campus is via the Avenue D exit on I-35e, which has been rerouted to make a direct connection to Avenue E (see map below).
Other items: For those who are interested, the UNT College of Music A Cappella Choir, conducted by Mel Ivey, is scheduled to perform in the new Murchison Performing Arts Center on Friday March 5 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature music of Avshalomov, Brahms, Britten, Carter and Copland. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased at the College of Music on the day of the performance.
